The much-anticipated 2024 Toyota Tacoma has finally arrived, and with it comes a new set of pricing and fuel economy figures. While the base price of the Tacoma has increased slightly, Toyota has also made some significant upgrades to the truck that make it worth the extra money.

Was it worth getting rid of the six cylinders that the Tacoma had, for a new four-cylinder and eight-speed transmission? I think it was. TRD off-road can save you 1 mile per gallon on average, even though it doesn’t look like that.

Toyota has increased the MPG from 1 to 2. So for SR and SR5, it is 3 MPG. For the SR5 4-wheel-drive variant, we can get 1 more mile per gallon on the highway. When we go to the Limited (i-FORCE) edition, the current Limited (i-FORCE) MPG is 19 in the city and 24 on the highway.

Whereas the new Limited (i-FORCE) model gets 20 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway. Limited (i-FORCE) is now a standard 4-wheel drive. Whereas in the current or outgoing model, we had the option of 2-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive.

The new TRD off-road model’s average is 19 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway. whereas the current TRD off-road reads 19 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway. That is for a 2-wheel drive variant because this new 2024 4th generation Tacoma TRD off-road only comes as a 4-wheel drive variant. That’s the only way the TRD off-road is coming. So the only truck that Toyota currently sells, which is only a 4-wheel-drive Tacoma, is the TRD Pro, which gets 17 miles per gallon in the city and 21 MPG on the highway; therefore, that makes the new TRD off-road 2 more miles per gallon than its 2023 outgoing models.

Another thing with the Tacoma’s fuel economy relates to the gas tank. The gas tank is an 18.2-gallon tank. So with the better efficiency of the truck, they shrank the gas tank. I am not a fan of that personally. It would have been nice if they gave us a 22–23-gallon tank. The current Tacoma has a 20-gallon tank. So keeping the same tank with better MPGs would just give us even more range out of the truck, which would be nice.

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma – A Price-Worthy Upgrade with Advanced Features

The pricing is actually pretty good because you’re getting a brand new truck with tons of new standard features like the wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android auto, standard LED headlights throughout all trim levels, and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 with the radar cruise control across all trim levels as well. There is just a lot that this truck has. Fully box frame, brand new crawl control for TRD Off-Road.

However, the price increased by about $500 to $2000 with certain models. the one outlier being the Limited (i-FORCE), which is about $7000 more than the current Limited (i-FORCE) model. We are going to get tons of standard new features on a Limited (i-FORCE) to warrant that extra price.

The base SR model of the new 2024 Toyota Tacoma is actually cheaper than the 2023 Tacoma. The base model of the SR with a 3.5L V6 engine for the year 2023 starts at $32195, whereas the new one starts at $31500.

The 2023 Tacoma SR5 with the 3.5L V6 engine and two-wheel drive starts at $36315. whereas the new SR5 double cab starts at $37200. So there is only a $500 difference. The 2023 TRD off-road base model initial pricing is $36790. Whereas the base price of a 2024 TRD off-road double cab starts at $41800. The 2023 TRD off-road is 2-wheel-drive and is showcased on Toyota’s website. But the new TRD off-road is only a 4-wheel drive.

The TRD off-road of the past with 2-wheel drive is more around the lines of the TRD pre-runner now, which is at $38100. We have the locker, all the suspension, and the BFG tires on the TRD pre-runner now. The 2023 TRD off-road with a 3.5L V6 engine, 4-wheel drive, and automatic transmission is $41090. 2024 TRD off-road double cab with 4-wheel and automatic transmission starts at $42,900. The difference is about $1810.

But the kicker is that the TRD Off-Road of the 4th generation Tacoma is basically a TRD Pro of the 3rd generation. We have Bilstein suspension with piggyback reservoirs. We have a sway bar disconnect on the new one, which the TRD Off-Road of the last generation does not have. We’re getting BFG tires that are co-developed with Toyota, as well as BFG, the next generation of crawl control. So this is the initial pricing breakdown. These prices may vary in the future. But these prices are very competitive. Tacoma should be coming, hopefully by the end of December or into January.

Conclusion

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma introduces enhancements and new features, justifying a modest price increase. The transition to a four-cylinder engine improves fuel efficiency, and the truck comes equipped with advanced features such as adaptive audio and conversational awareness. Despite a smaller gas tank, the Tacoma offers a compelling package with standard wireless connectivity and safety systems. The TRD Off-Road model, akin to the previous TRD Pro, adds to the appeal. Overall, the 2024 Tacoma remains competitive, offering performance, features, and value in the midsize truck segment.
