When it comes to sequels, a comparison with The Empire Strikes Back It's as good as it looks. After all, the Star Wars The film is widely considered one of the best sequels of all time given its expansion of the original narrative, the way it adds layers to the characters, and its many iconic settings. For any film to be placed next to the 1980 classic is almost stupid praise, which is why it's no surprise that Denis Villeneuve has a humble reaction to Christopher Nolan's recent comment about Dune: Part Two.
Earlier this month, Podcast In Search of the Lost posted a video of Christopher Nolan comparing the upcoming sci-fi epic to the beloved second film in the Star Wars franchise and our sister site radar games recently followed up with Dune: Part Two The director asked him how he felt about the comparison. As expected, the French-Canadian filmmaker did not immediately claim that his film was superior to the classic, but was kind to both the critic and his source:
It is a comparison that I would never have dared to make. I think that's a beautiful compliment because Empire Strikes Back is by far my favorite Star Wars movie. So, it's like it's coming from Chris. [Nolan]an incredible compliment.
It's a little fun to Dune: Part Two be compared with The Empire Strikes Back since Frank Herbert Dune was enormously influential in George Lucas's original creation of Star Wars. It's a fun ouroboros of pop culture. That said, the parallels are pretty clear. As Empirethe new 2024 blockbuster is designed as the middle chapter of a three-part arc (Denis Villeneuve envisions the completion of a trilogy with an adaptation of Dune: Messiah), and the movie does the three things I highlighted in the first paragraph regarding Dune: Part One: Grows the world, deepens the characters, and leaves you speechless in its visual splendor. Other comparisons could be made with more spoilers, but I'll stop discussing them before the release for those of you who haven't read the book and already know what's coming.
Dune: Part Two It picks up where the previous film left off, with Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) being adopted by Fremen society following the destruction of House Atreides. As Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) and Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV (Christopher Walken) plot to restart the brutal spice mining operations on the planet Arrakis, Paul and the Fremen begin fighting the occupying forces, although Paul is plagued by visions. from the future. where his leadership ultimately leads to the death of millions. The outstanding cast also includes Zendaya, Javier Bardem, Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Léa Seydoux, Souheila Yacoub, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista and Charlotte Rampling.
