Friends and readers, the IMAX format is on a roll. 2024 movies as Dune: Part Two and Civil war They have been promoting that particular location in their marketing, which is great news for the future. But what's even more exciting are the reissues, like Christopher Nolan's. Principle, that have been enticing moviegoers to partake in the magic of the 70mm large format outside of the crop of incoming blockbusters.
With that particular scenario in mind, I'd like to suggest some long-delayed reissues that the IMAX format could benefit from. For the most part, though, I've put together this list as a love letter to exciting outings from the past, as well as a few titles that I missed for one reason or another and are still looking to catch. So let's start the countdown and go big with these delicious IMAX releases that deserve another twist.
speed runner
You can bet I caught the Wachowskis. speed runner when it was first released in IMAX. But now, with the film's critical reappraisal, it seems like the perfect time to bring that large-format magic back to the biggest screens possible, if only to encourage a 4K remaster and home video release to follow.
Tron: Legacy
As we make our way to Tron: Ares next disney movie October 10, 2025 release date, people will want to revisit the 2010s Tron: Legacy. The IMAX 3D variant is hands down the best way to experience Joseph Kosinski's stunning cult classic, and a revival could fuel the next installment in the series. tron The franchise's timeline journey to the big moment.
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
Sometimes an important movie like Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol films special scenes in IMAX format, but does not send that version to home video. As the series remains quite popular, despite Dead Reckoning box office performance, Ghost Protocol Lighting the fuse on IMAX is a great opportunity to remind people why the format works so well.
Fantasy 2000
In the absence of more deliveries than what was supposed to be a Fancy franchise, bringing back Fantasy 2000 for a new generation would make the most of people looking for 70mm IMAX entertainment. It could also spark a desire for a new installment, which in turn could be a major cinematic event waiting to happen. Also, “Rhapsody In Blue” in true IMAX would especially make my day.
The polar Express
For my money, IMAX 3D is the superior three-dimensional experience at the movies. And although I have seen periodic reissues of The polar Express In regional IMAX screenings, this year's 20th anniversary basically calls for this holiday favorite to ride the rails on a broader scale.
treasure planet
treasure planet It's another Disney film that seems to have gained more love over time, and was also part of the early era of IMAX conversions for the studio's work. If you can convince me that Jim Hawkins' journey through space to come of age wouldn't look or sound brilliant in this format, I'll stop ordering it… but good luck trying.
Tangled up
One of several IMAX titles offered in 3D internationally, which has Tangled up Reissued for the rest of the world to experience, it would be a huge, beautiful sight. While I totally understand that it's hard to see three-dimensional emotions through tears of joy, I think it would definitely be worth the extra money on the big screen.
There is no time to die
Yes, I have another international IMAX 3D variant to plug in, because while the company seems to distance itself from wide-ranging releases in the format, movies like There is no time to die I can still enjoy those versions. The standard 3D was a pleasure to Daniel Craig's James Bond A swan song, so I could only imagine that the expansion of the picture's premium format would be even more exciting to behold.
Dune
Very similar There is no time to dieDenis Villeneuve's first half of the game Dune It also received the IMAX 3D treatment in certain international markets. With the 70 mm variant Dune: Part Two Already making IMAX money again, having a double feature that includes this version of the previous part of the story simply makes business sense.
Royal Steel
While we continue to wait for some kind of movement in the Royal Steel Disney+ series, Shawn Levy's rock 'em sock 'em sci-fi film has become a streaming champion. The fan base seems to be there, so why not let the people indulge in some massive robot fighting action on an IMAX screen?
Ford vs. Ferrari
It's true that many of the films on this list are pretty big genre projects, which tends to account for the majority of films that come to IMAX. However, learning that Ford vs. Ferrari I had a limited print run in large format, it just makes me want to relive the heartbreak and triumph of Matt Damon and Christian Bale's journey through motorsport.
The Martian
Yeah the martian The IMAX 3D variant could return to premium auditoriums around the world; I'd be happy to sit through Mark Watney's journey to survive in the wilds of Mars at least a handful of times. Plus, this would be a perfect double feature for Matt Damon with Ford vs. Ferrari either Interstellarwhich is actually returning to IMAX this November!
Top Gun: Maverick
While I could see Top Gun: Maverick In a Dolby auditorium, I missed the opportunity to experience this sequel to Tom Cruise's legacy in IMAX format. If we are to make the world so excited by a potential Top Gun 3 As Mr. Cruise happens to be, a reissue of this box office goliath is a good first step.
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
The original animation. Beauty and the Beast was Disney's first IMAX reissue of a vault classic. As if that weren't enough incentive to return this story as old as time to the cinema, this variant is also the Special Edition, which restores what is often overlooked and yet, better Beauty and the Beast song “Human again.” I need to see and hear this movie on an IMAX system, and I especially need that tune to be part of the experience.
Alita: Battle Angel
There was a IMAX revival of Alita: Battle Angel as part of an initial effort to get fans back into movie theaters in late 2020. But if 20th Century Studios really wanted to take advantage of the reissue craze that seems to be happening right now, in addition to trying to gauge the popularity of the adaptation of Robert Rodriguez's cult favorite manga, another roll of the dice on IMAX 3D would certainly be welcome.
turning red
Yes I know turning red was re-released in theaters this spring. However, there are two versions that sadly never got to shine in its hugely altered 2022 theatrical run: 3D and IMAX. Seeing that the film was optimized for large format when I first saw it on Disney+ broke my heart, as the gigantic ending alone would have been worth the price of admission.
Our girl Mei deserves her day in IMAX and the 2024 theatrical landscape has plenty of room. With plenty of other titles on this list set to get their premium ticket, there's certainly a wide range of options to entice moviegoers to continue fueling the format's recent boom.
