Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyerthe husband and wife duo best known for their roles on the HBO series True Bloodrecently spoke about their experience working together on the series and their upcoming film, Some lightfor ET's “Spilling the E-Tea.”
The couple, who have been together for more than two decades, recalled one particularly memorable sex scene from True Blood as well as their collaborative work on their new project.
Paquin joked with her husband, saying, “I interrupted you in the crowd at our premiere telling you that if you hadn't hired me you would have been in trouble. What part of me playing Ella impressed you the most?”
Moyer, who directed some light, praised Paquin's portrayal of Ella, an alcoholic mother navigating her grief and guilt in the film. “When I read Some light For the first time it was a play and I thought it would be a wonderful script. It was written by my friend Rebecca Cellard, or Becks, as we call her, and when I read this, you were the first person I immediately thought of,” Moyer said. “There are very few people in my orbit who could go down the rabbit hole of complexity that Ella's character needed to inhabit.
Paquin laughed, “And I'm not afraid to cry ugly on camera,” and pressed Moyer on what specifically impressed him about her performance. Moyer responded, “The fact that you went to all the places I needed you to go to create this character. I knew you would, that's why I cast you.”
Paquin also praised Moyer's directing style, noting, “You're exceptionally talented. You think about imagery and storytelling and camera angles and you know the inside and outside of every aspect of making a movie or a TV show, and that's really interesting”.
The conversation turned to their work together in True Blood, particularly a scene involving Paquin's character, Sookie, and Joe Manganiello's character, Alcide, in the season 7 opener. Moyer recalled the intricate technical setup of the scene, which required the camera to pan over the Manganiello's muscular back. Paquin added: “It's what a friend of mine once called like you're a pirate; it's like having a shoulder of five parrots.”
The pair joked about the complexity of the scene, with Moyer noting, “I had to let Joe, in front of our entire crew, take your parts.”
“Yes, but I had also given my consent repeatedly,” Paquin clarified.
Moyer recalled yelling instructions to Manganiello: “'I need you to do it, Joe,' and I was giving him permission in front of our entire team.”
“And then he said, 'Honey, is he okay?' and I said, 'Please do it,'” Paquin added humorously.
