Annecy Festival 2024 Residency Selection!
Party from June 9 to 15, 2024 Mifa June 11-14, 2024
The Annecy Festival Residency will celebrate its fourthth edition of 5th April to 28th June 2024. Will host 3 new artists at Papeteries – Image Factory to work on the visual identity of their animated feature films.
Here are some key figures, the 2024 edition of the Annecy Festival Residency includes:
36 presentations
25 different nationalities
42% of the projects are led by women
The selection committee had the delicate task of making an eclectic and equitable selection of these submissions. The goal was to identify projects that would leverage the full benefits of the residency, ensure overall consistency, and demonstrate their appeal to the animated film industry.
The selection committee is made up of a large group of animation professionals whose objective is to analyze the projects in depth. For this 2024 edition, aurelia (Draughter, Director), Damien Brunner (Producer, Folivari), Jean-Christophe Roger (Director), Sara Wikler (Medical Script) and Valerie Yendt (Distributor, Gebeka Films) collectively selected:
Uncle Jo's Cabin by Marie Deboissy (France) Production: Offshore/White Star (France)
1967. With a heavy heart, 9-year-old Lili leaves Tunisia with her mother. She goes to live with her aunt Denise and her uncle Jo in Saint-Denis. Lili doesn't like being there. The buildings are gray, Aunt Denise is a clean freak, Uncle Jo is uncommunicative, her five cousins are loud, and the group of kids hanging around the streets call her a “dirty foreigner.” Escaping the hostility of the neighborhood and her family, Lili decides to transform a vacant lot in the middle of the city into a lush jasmine garden, like in Tunisia.
Yours by Tigran Arakelyan (Armenia) Production: OnOff Studio (Armenia), Sacrebleu Productions (France), Broom Films (Lithuania)
The film is based on a true story. Zako is the name German soldiers gave to the Soviet-Armenian painter Sargis Mangasaryan during World War II. Zako was in charge of drawing the portraits of his executioners. Thanks to his talent he survived the hell of the camps and avoided exile in Siberia. In 1956, while visiting the famous Picasso exhibition at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, he was deeply moved by Guernicawhich brought back his own memories of World War II.
insectary by Sofía Carrillo (Mexico) Production: Pimienta Films (Mexico)
In a world where insects have become extinct, Cerulia works cataloging and preserving specimens for the private collection of a renowned entomologist. One afternoon, leaving work, he accidentally knocks a valuable moth off the pin that holds it in place. In an attempt to hide the evidence, he takes the moth home, only to discover that it comes back to life.
“A selection based on the spirit of the times. This is how the selection committee could describe its options for this 4th edition of the Annecy Festival Residency.
Like what festivals and cinemas fervently defend, the committee was deeply moved by the stories that confront us with the reality of our world and its complexity. Narratives directed by authors who use all their poetic gifts to address “unfortunately” familiar but current topics such as the extinction of species, uprooting or imprisonment in times of war.
These promising animation filmmakers cast a sincere and well-informed look at our society, acting as witnesses and protagonists, because cinema offers us this unlimited margin to interpret life.
His works address important themes, captured by artists who admirably handle screenwriting, art, and camera work. The 2024 selection reflects this commitment to supporting brave and distinctive projects, where hope and art allow heroes and works to fight the most glorious battles to defend life.
The committee trusts in the unity that will emerge from these unique meetings, around such different but complementary projects! We look forward to seeing the results of this successful trio at Mifa in June!”
