In today’s fast-paced world, cars have become technological marvels, boasting an array of features that would astound someone traveling back in time just 10-15 years. The rise of Electric Vehicles (EVs) has accelerated this transformation, with automakers using them as laboratories to showcase cutting-edge innovations. From sprawling two-foot screens to an abundance of driver assistance systems, full entertainment packages, and an overwhelming number of seat adjustments, modern cars are a veritable treasure trove of high-tech amenities.
Yet, amid this technological revolution, there are individuals who remain unimpressed or simply uninterested in some of these features. While the advancements are undoubtedly impressive, they often come at a price, driving up the cost of vehicles. Additionally, some of these technological marvels remain underutilized or even shunned by certain drivers. Take, for example, hands-free driving systems and smart cruise control; they are features that I, for one, steadfastly refuse to use.
My hesitance does not stem from irrational fear, but rather a cautious skepticism about the readiness of this technology. Trust, after all, is a paramount concern when it comes to letting go of the wheel. The fact that these systems require drivers to keep their eyes forward and their hands poised near the wheel to take control at a moment’s notice raises significant doubts. This skepticism is particularly pronounced in regions like Southern California, where traffic congestion is a daily battle, and the practicality of such systems during stop-and-go traffic is questionable at best.
