Donald Glover's 'Lando' 'Star Wars' Series Now A Movie

In July it was learned that Donald and Stephen Glover had been intervened by Disney and Lucasfilm to replace Justin Simien as writers of a new television series “Lando” on Disney+. But not so fast. The project is actually being developed as a “Lando” movie, Lucasfilm confirmed. Variety. Glover debuted as a young Lando Calrissian in the 2018 hit “Star Wars” film “Solo,” which was a notable box office disappointment for Disney and Lucasfilm.

Stephen Glover first broke the news of a “Lando” movie in a recent appearance on the “Pablo Torre Finds Out” podcast, telling the host: “It’s not even a show… the idea now is to make a movie. Right now, because of the strike, all the information is like a telephone.” That's all the information Stephen was able to provide. Lucasfilm later confirmed the news.

The first news that a Lando Calrissian limited series was in the works was in December 2020. At the time, “Dear White People” creator Justin Simien was attached to the project. He exited and was replaced by the Glover brothers, who are developing it as a film. The character of Lando was originally played by Billy Dee Williams in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.”

Donald Glover revealed in a video interview with GQ magazine in April that he was talking to Lucasfilm about another project centered on Lando in the “Star Wars” universe. He said: “We are talking about it. That's all I can say without [Lucasfilm president] “Kathleen Kennedy is after me.”

“Lando is charm incarnate,” Glover continued at the time. “He is a kind of nonconformist, which I don't think there is much of anymore. It's hard to be a smooth talker nowadays. Where is the line? There is also the danger. How close can you get without tripping?

Glover added: “I would love to play Lando again. It's a fun time being him. It just has to be the right way to do it. The time is gold. In recent years, this pandemic has really made people experience time… People realize that their time is valuable. You only get a limited quantity. I'm not interested in doing anything that's a waste of time or just a paycheck. I prefer to spend time with people I enjoy. It just has to be the right thing to do and I think it could be. “Lando is definitely someone I like to hang out with.”
