March has been a very different month for the 2024 national box office compared to what we were used to in the previous two. In January and February, Hollywood had little to really get moviegoers excited about heading to their local theater, and that was largely reflected in ticket sales. However, the last few weeks have been anything but, as Mike Mitchell kung fu panda 4 and Denis Villeneuve Dune: Part Two are proving to be the best tandem hit we've seen in theaters since last summer. Barbenheimer.
The first figures show that kung fu panda 4 is going to come out Dune: Part Two In this weekend's battle, both films are doing excellent business after their respective excellent premieres. Check out the full Top 10 numbers below and join me for analysis.

Kung Fu Panda 4 Looks To Maintain Its Box Office Crown With Less Than 50 Percent Drop From Weekend To Weekend
Many blockbusters from the post-pandemic film landscape have been successful at the box office: they have been solid debuts thanks to the anticipation of die-hard fans and those most curious about the title, but then the numbers drop. off a cliff while the rest of the movie audience decides to wait patiently until the release airs. It's caused a lot of disappointment in the industry in recent years… but this month's releases go wonderfully against the grain.
seven days ago, Dune: Part Two made magic with a stunning 44 percent weekend-to-weekend drop following its best start to 2024, and now kung fu panda 4 has achieved a similar feat. DreamWorks Animation's popular new hit grossed an impressive $58 million when it hit the big screen earlier this month, and families are still snapping up tickets: the new film added $30 million to its domestic gross since on Friday, which is estimated at an excellent 48 percent. dressing.
By The numbers, the film starring Jack Black and Awkwafina has already entered nine-figure territory domestically, having grossed $107.7 million. This makes it the second biggest film of the year so far, surpassing Reinaldo Marcus Green. Bob Marley: One lovewhich as you will notice, is still in the Top 10.
Until now, the trajectory of kung fu panda 4 is very much in line with the business that made the franchise's seminal film back in 2008. After John Stevenson and Mark Osborne Kung Fu Panda debuted earning $60.2 million, it earned $33.6 million in its second weekend. The new sequel is a bit short of those numbers, but the road still leads to big results, as its predecessor ultimately earned $215 million domestically at the end of its big screen run.
The animated film has yet to take off internationally, having only earned $31 million overseas to add to its earnings in the United States and Canada (equaling a worldwide total of $138.7 million). That said, it hasn't launched in some major markets yet, including China, Brazil, Australia, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom, although that will launch later this month. The film's overall profile should change considerably before the calendars turn to April.
Dune: Part Two crosses $200 million domestically and $400 million internationally
While kung fu panda 4 entertains children and families, Dune: Part Two continues to surprise adults and the two films are succeeding together rather than competing directly. Early numbers from Sunday show the sci-fi epic will be less than $1 million short of reclaiming the box office crown, but what's more important is sustained success.
After its minimal drop last weekend, Dune: Part TwoThis weekend's numbers only fell 37 percent, as the premiere added another $29.1 million in ticket sales. To date, the film has grossed $205.3 million domestically, which is by far the most money any title has grossed in 2024 so far. This is clearly the result of excellent word of mouth and moviegoers who attended multiple screenings and wanted to appreciate the magnificence of the film on the big screen (an experience I highly recommended in my Dune: Part Two CinemaBlend reviews and continues to proselytize to anyone who will listen).
Given that it cost $190 million to make (via Variety), the star-studded blockbuster needed to be a hit, and one imagines there's been plenty of champagne at Legendary Pictures. The film has more than doubled its budget worldwide, having grossed $417.6 million globally so far, and the numbers continue to rise. For some reason, nothing has been known about the death of Denis Villeneuve. Dune: Messiah get the official green light yet (the film would complete the writer/director's dream of a Dune trilogy), but it seems inevitable at this point.
With audiences distracted, King Arthur is largely ignored by moviegoers
While moviegoers were excited Dune: Part Two and kung fu panda 4 Last weekend, Jeff Wadlow's PG-13 horror film Imaginary was left in the lurch and only raised $9.9 million while the public was distracted. This week, the most notable title in that position is that of Simon Cellan Jones. Arthur the king. The dog-centric drama starring Mark Wahlberg and Simu Liu garnered a mixed response from critics (read CinemaBlend's 2.5-star review of the film) and is warming the hearts of audiences (as evidenced by the “A” rating of movie score surveys), but otherwise it's not getting much attention, as evidenced by its $7.5 million start.
There are good news. The movie It supposedly cost $20 million. do, and positive word of mouth could end up doing you some favors. Two years ago, Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin Dog It grossed just $14.8 million in its debut and ended its worldwide theatrical run earning $84.7 million. Yeah Arthur the king You can even do 75 percent of that business, it will be considered a success. We'll be alert.
Next week we will see the arrival of another blockbuster on the scene, like that of Jason Reitman. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will be released on a wide scale and Sydney Sweeney will also return to the big screen starring in Michael Mohan's horror film. Immaculate. How will they affect the Top 10?
