Defending champions, England, are currently grappling with a lackluster World Cup campaign. However, assistant coach Marcus Trescothick, in an interview on Saturday, emphasized that their belief in the 50-over format remains unwavering.
On Sunday, England is set to face the undefeated hosts, India, in Lucknow. Their campaign has been marred by four defeats in five matches, placing them in the ninth position among the ten participating teams, with their chances of reaching the semi-finals dwindling.
Trescothick addressed the situation, acknowledging the mounting pressure, stating, “We’re all feeling the heat. But what can you do? We prepared diligently and followed a similar approach to what’s expected. Each practice session leaves us feeling optimistic and well-prepared. Unfortunately, things haven’t quite clicked when we step onto the field.”

Critics have raised questions about England’s approach to the 50-over format, particularly after their 2019 World Cup victory, with only 13 ODI matches played in the lead-up to their title defense.
Trescothick responded to these concerns, saying, “Forgive me for being straightforward, but we haven’t lost faith in this format. We have a deep passion for cricket in all its forms and were eager to come here and attempt a back-to-back 50-over triumph. We remain committed to excelling in all formats.”
He went on, “The cricket schedules of today are filled with Twenty20s, One-Day Internationals, and Test matches. Finding the ideal balance can be difficult; occasionally we achieve, sometimes we fail.”
Trescothick, a former left-handed batsman who represented England in 76 Tests and 123 ODIs between 2000 and 2006, expressed the team’s eagerness to face India on their home turf and make the event memorable. “It’s an amazing experience to play against India in their home country during the World Cup,” he said. We expect a sizable crowd and an amazing atmosphere because these possibilities are uncommon.”
He concluded, “We’re looking forward to this chance. Our focus is on delivering a strong performance and, hopefully, emerging victorious. We are genuinely excited about it.”
England’s most recent setback was an eight-wicket loss to Sri Lanka, during which their batting collapsed, managing only 156 runs and severely denting their semi-final aspirations.
Trescothick clarified that their current priority is to rectify their performance rather than obsessing over a place in the top four. He remarked, “Our primary focus is on improving our performance and reaching the higher standards we’ve displayed in the past few weeks. The prospect of reaching the semi-finals will take care of itself. While it remains a mathematical possibility, we acknowledge the considerable challenge ahead.”
