Taylor, an award-winning actress and playwright, is partnering with Columbia College on the Black Mixtape project, a show inspired by her socially minded conversations about Black Lives Matter and the pandemic. Her song is titled “Stand Up, Speak.” And those words go beyond her catchy phrase. Taylor wants submissions, focused on the conversations needed, to answer questions about the mood, desires, hopes and anxieties about the country's current political landscape: How do we end the persistent violence that afflicts everyday life? How do we create equitable spaces for gender and identity expressions? She begins by giving a platform to a voice.
The Black Mixtape is one such project: from submissions, six students will be selected to win $400 each. Original work can be from any discipline and cover various topics, from politics to mental health, gun control, water, etc. The audiovisual duration can be up to 7 minutes. Participants can submit as many times as they want. The deadline to apply is March 29. Winners will be announced on April 5.
