Lenovo has announced the launch of a new plan aimed at helping customers extend PC lifecycles and improve sustainability by allowing them to deploy refurbished devices.
The initiative, called Lenovo certified refurbishedwill prevent rapid recovery and short lifecycles of PCs by ensuring they are reused for “different computing needs” rather than being discarded.
As part of the plan, the device maker also revealed that Lenovo Truscale Device as a Service (DaaS) customers will also be able to achieve reductions in IT emissions by improving the overall circularity of devices.
Lenovo Truscale Daas is an “outcomes-based consumption” model, the company said, meaning it can help businesses efficiently manage services and reduce waste through a single source.

Lenovo is not alone in its sustainability efforts
Lenovo's move comes amid a period of increased focus on device sustainability among major manufacturers.
In January, Logitech announced that Five of its existing video collaboration devices were being redesigned with “next life” recycled plastics to reduce their carbon footprint..
Logitech COO Prakash Arunkundrum attributed the move to the company's pursuit of more climate-conscious customers.
Lenovo also commits to “implementing circular practices at every stage of the IT lifecycle.” The firm specifically highlighted this as a key differentiator for enterprise clients, many of whom are becoming increasingly environmentally conscious.
Bev White, CEO of Nash Squared, said ITPro that manufacturers and suppliers are increasing sustainability options in direct response to customer demands.
“Technology leaders will need to find innovative ways to use the technology they have to commit to a more sustainable future, as a silver bullet is not on the horizon,” he said.
“The current economic situation may not be helping, but we need to get Net Zero off the 'corporate governance' agenda and into real working practices and operations on the ground,” White added.
Through the Lenovo 360 Circle community, the company will make sure to pay close attention to channel partners, ensuring that they participate in the circular economy roadmap.
Lenovo certified refurbished PCs also undergo comprehensive data sanitization, according to the firm, as well as expert testing to meet Lenovo's quality, security and performance standards.
“Environmental sustainability is an important concern for companies of all sizes and in all sectors,” said Claudia Contreras, executive director of Global Sustainability Services at Lenovo.
“Certified refurbished will help reduce e-waste, give new life to devices and positively contribute to the circular economy,” he added.
“Organizations in industries like technology and telecommunications must change their view that it is only certain sectors that create the fumes and chemicals that impact the planet,” White said.
