Palworld pushes Xbox to best month for console playtime

PocketPair's Palworld, a game the internet dubbed 'Pokémon with guns' before its early access release in January, has been a huge hit for both the developer and Xbox.

Xbox has celebrated a “fast start” to 2024, revealing that January was actually its “biggest month on console” in terms of play time.

in a blog post Detailing Xbox's efforts to support independent developers, Microsoft highlighted Palworld as a key reason for this record and stated that Palworld has had more than 10,000,000 players on consoles so far.

In January, Microsoft announced that Palworld had the largest third-party launch in Game Pass history. Meanwhile, on Steam, Palword recorded two million concurrent players, making it the second game to achieve this, the other being PUBG.

While the game is only available on Xbox and PC for now, there has been talk of it coming to additional platforms in the future. Earlier this year, Playstation indies boss Shuhei Yoshida suggested that he was looking to bring Palworld to PlayStation.

But despite this success and demand, Pocketpair plans to remain a small studio, with founder Takuro Mizobe stating that he wants to “make several small games” and that “big-budget triple-A games are not for us.” However, the executive stated that he would be open to considering partnership or acquisition offers.

Separately, the studio recently opened applications for a closed Palworld trial program, but warned that applicants shouldn't expect to use it to “play for free or experience new content early.”
