Patrick Swayze was honored at the New York premiere of Jake Gyllenhaal's road house new version on Tuesday, March 19.
Before the movie began, a photo of the late actor was shown on the big screen with a tribute that read: “In memory of Patrick Swayze, whose legacy of strength and greatness reminds us all to BE NICE.”
The title card is not expected to be in the streaming version, which will arrive on Prime Video on Thursday, March 21.
Swayze, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2009 at age 57, starred in the 1989 film. road house as a bouncer at a particularly rowdy bar in the Midwest. Gyllenhaal, 43, plays the role in the sequel. They previously worked together on the 2001 drama. Donnie Darko.
“I mean, from the beginning, from the moment I met Patrick, we worked on the movie. Donnie Darko — and of all the scenes we filmed and over the years, he and his wife, Lisa [Niemi] – and even Lisa to this day – have been loving and supportive,” Gyllenhaal said. I think he grew up with that kind of theatrical dance ensemble idea, and he always brought it to the groups he worked with and brought it to me. Earlier this month, the actor took instagram to reflect on Swayze's generosity while sharing a photo of the couple.
“I've been reminiscing about the time I spent working with Patrick on Donnie Darkoand see this great man again in the original Road House and in many other films. “I never stopped being a fan,” Gyllenhaal wrote on March 3. “He had great talent and I continue to have a lot of respect and admiration for what he presented to the world. I will never forget his kindness to me when I began; he didn't have to take the time, but he always did.”
Gyllenhaal hopes his new version is one Swayze would have enjoyed. He added: “This time we've created a different RH, but we hope you had fun watching!”
The story of the remake is not identical to the original. Gyllenhaal plays a former UFC fighter hired as a bouncer in the Florida Keys.
“[Honoring Swayze] It was important to me. “He created the character and I wanted to capture it,” Gyllenhaal said at the film's London premiere earlier this week, according to Reuters.
The star added: “Patrick was always very kind to me and very supportive at the beginning of my career. “I took some of the tattoos with me, we designed some tattoos in honor of him, just because I really loved him.”
