Alan Wake developer Remedy Entertainment has announced that it has acquired all rights to its Control series from publisher 505 Games for €17 million.
As detailed in an investor announcement On Remedy's website, the rights acquisition, which includes publishing, distribution and marketing, covers the entire Control franchise, including the supernatural third-person shooter's debut game in 2019, the upcoming Control 2 and the spinoff multiplayer codenamed Condor, and all future titles in the series.
Remedy's publishing deal with 505 Games for Control 2 and Condor ends immediately, and 505 will continue as Control's publisher until December 31 of this year, when the transition period ends.
Remedy's acquisition announcement notes that the approximately €17 million it has shelled out for the rights to Control “is equivalent to the amount 505 Games has paid for the development of codename Condor and Control 2 to date, including a smaller premium “. The net purchase price will be paid in three cash installments over the next twelve months.
Today's announcement, of course, seems like a bit of a repeat of history; In 2019, Remedy revealed that it had reached a deal with Microsoft to acquire the rights to Alan Wake for €2.5 million, a move that resulted in the previously Xbox-exclusive cult classic making the jump to other platforms before receive the remastering treatment and, last year, a highly anticipated sequel.
As for Control 2 and the Condor project, both were announced in November 2022. However, they are likely still a long way off, as Control 2 was confirmed to still be in the “proof of concept” stage last October , while Condor, as with Remedy's Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes, was said to have “progressed to the preparation stage for production.”
