RimWorld's Horror-Themed Anomaly Expansion Revealed, Coming Next Month

RimWorld, Ludeon Studios' acclaimed sci-fi colony simulator, will soon be besieged by “monstrous creatures, mind-blowing mysteries, infiltrating parasites, and sanity-destroying phenomena” when its new horror-themed expansion, Anomaly, hits Steam on next year. month.

Anomaly, RimWorld's fourth paid expansion following Biotechnology, Royalty, and Ideology, begins when the colonists accidentally provoke a mad superintelligence, unleashing its horrors and twisting the world with “sinister, unnerving, mind-controlling, and shocking” threats.

The idea, explains Ludeon on Steam, is to give players the tools they need to build their own horror stories, and the developer cites the likes of Cabin in the Woods, The Thing, The Cthulhu Mythos and Hellraiser as inspirations for the expansion. .

Some of the threats mentioned in the study's publication include a psychically invisible hunter that can be detected by building proximity sensors, but is only combated when revealed; a massive meat beast that crawls across the landscape, requiring players to cut off chunks to study and defeat it; a pulsating obelisk radiating “dirty energy” that can mutate colonists, copy them, or transport them to an endless gray labyrinth; even a double corpse that will relentlessly pursue a single settler.

New enemies include flesh beasts, water beasts, undead hordes, spherical death machines, and cultists armed with psychic rituals, but a selection of new tools should give players a fighting chance against them. Expect to see flamethrowers, Hellcat rifles, flesh-mutating pushbuttons, madness-inducing weapons, and more. There's also a new containment facility, which allows players to capture and study monsters, then collect their bioferrite and shards, which can be used to create “experimental serums, psychic rituals, ghoulification surgeries, and void-powered constructs.”

Anomaly also promises a new ending, with Ludeon teasing: “In the end, the abyssal void will swallow the world and you must choose your destiny.”

In addition to Anomaly, Ludeon has detailed the free RimWorld 1.5 update, which is now available for testing. This is a big deal: feature books, shelves, sofas, ornate doors, wall sconces, spotlights, and hidden ducts for starters. This is in addition to the colonists' ability to dramatically crawl when knocked down (leaving a trail of blood in their wake), plus the ability for colonists to spawn possessions related to their traits, the introduction of bionic jaws, and organ decay. , visual and user interface improvements. and more, like detailed in an extensive changelog.

RimWorld Update 1.5 will be fully released alongside the paid anomaly expansion in a month.” Ludeon says he will share additional details in a series of blog posts over the coming weeks.
