Stunning Triumph: Rising U.S. Gymnast, Kaliya Lincoln, Shines Bright with Gold at Pan Am Games

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Kaliya Lincoln, a sensational talent in the world of gymnastics, has achieved a remarkable feat by winning a gold medal in the floor exercise at the Pan American Games in Chile. What makes her journey even more compelling is her connection to the legendary Gabby Douglas, the trailblazing black gymnast who clinched an Olympic gold medal. In a mere five years, Lincoln has transformed from a young girl with big dreams to a champion on the rise.

As a key member of the victorious U.S. gymnastics team in Santiago, this 17-year-old sensation is now on the path to Paris Olympics next year, propelled by her resounding success in Chile.

Reflecting on her journey, Lincoln expressed, “It has been quite a year. I have to keep pushing myself, as there are so many outstanding athletes out there. It’s an honor to be part of this team, and I’ve learned from the very best.”

Lincoln, who did not participate in the world championship earlier this month, overcame two strong contenders to secure the gold with an impressive score of 14.233 points. Her compatriot Kayla DiCello, the reigning Pan American all-around champion, and the Brazilian sensation Flávia Saraiva, both gave their all and shared the silver with scores of 13.733 points.

In August, Lincoln’s star began to shine brightly as she clinched the silver medal in the floor exercise at the U.S. Classic, sharing the glory with Joscelyn Roberson. She continued her ascent by finishing second in the U.S. National Gymnastics Championships, with only the superstar Simone Biles ahead of her.

The heartwarming connection between Lincoln and Gabby Douglas began on the TV program “Undercover Boss: Celebrity Edition.” In a surprise disguise, the iconic gymnast mentored three promising young athletes, including the now Pan American champion. Their bond grew stronger over time.

Lincoln’s gold medal in the floor exercise at this prestigious multisport event is a significant milestone in her journey. Starting her gymnastics journey at the tender age of 5, the 17-year-old now dedicates over 30 hours a week to rigorous training.

Meanwhile, Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade, another standout at the Pan American Games, opted not to compete in the floor exercise. On the final day of artistic gymnastics in Santiago, she secured her second gold medal in the balance-beam competition.

Expressing her joy and pride, Andrade stated, “I am very happy and proud to have come here after the long world championship, and deliver strong performances. I felt prepared and confident to do what was necessary. It was a fantastic debut at the Pan American Games, and I couldn’t be happier.”

The rivalry and friendship between Andrade and Biles took center stage once again as Andrade clinched another gold in the vault on Tuesday.
