Teamsters will provide all US-based members access to guaranteed approved income protection benefits through Union One

WASHINGTON, March 22, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — In a historic initiative to improve the financial security of its members, the International Union of Teamsters (“Teamsters” or “IBT”) has announced the launch of the IBT Voluntary Income Protection Plus (VIP+) Plan, supported by Prudential Life Insurance and administered by Union One.

A commitment to financial protection for Teamsters members

The VIP+ Plan represents a significant advancement in IBT's efforts to provide its members with access to benefits that better protect against the financial implications of missing work due to unexpected health problems. This collaborative effort ensures Teamsters members have the support they need to focus on recovering from an illness, injury or surgery, without the stress of financial instability. In a letter dated January 22, 2024to all members of local unions and joint councils, general president of IBT Sean O'Brien wrote, “We are pleased to announce a new voluntary Teamster Privilege benefit for Teamster members that provides additional financial protection if they are unable to work due to illness, injury, or loss of DOT certification due to a medical condition.”

Plan Highlights

  • Life insurance: Members can sign up for up to $500,000 Life Insurance regardless of their pre-existing medical conditions, offering peace of mind for them and their loved ones. Spouses and dependent children may also be covered.
  • Disability insurance: The VIP+ Plan offers important short- and long-term disability options through which members can obtain coverage without being subject to medical questions or testing. This inclusion underscores IBT's dedication to the well-being of each member.
    • Protection for specialty licenses: Designed to safeguard members with CDLs, FAA pilot certificates and other specialized licenses, the VIP+ Plan protects members when they face license restrictions or suspensions due to medical conditions. This unique coverage upgrade ensures that all members have access to the protection they need for the work they do.
