In a surprising turn of events, it seems that Naughty Dog, the renowned developer behind The Last of Us series, may be secretly working on a remastered edition of The Last of Us Part II, a mere three years after the game’s initial release.
Eagle-eyed fans recently stumbled upon an intriguing clue on Naughty Dog’s lead outsource artist Mark Pajarillo’s LinkedIn page. The profile mentioned Pajarillo’s involvement in overseeing the production of outsourced environment art assets, weapons, and interactive props for both The Last of Us: Part One and The Last of Us 2: Remastered. While the specific mention of “The Last of Us Part II Remastered” has since vanished from the page, the internet retains screenshots of the original entry, leaving fans speculating.
Adding to the buzz, The Last of Us composer Gustavo Santaolalla dropped a hint about an enhanced version of Part II during a July interview with TCMFGames, as translated by the fan account Naughty Dog Info on X. Santaolalla teased that in these “new editions” of the game, players might have the chance to interact with his in-game character and request specific tracks from the series. While Naughty Dog has not officially confirmed the development of The Last of Us Part II Remastered, many suspect that if it were to materialize, it would likely be a PlayStation 5 exclusive.
The history of The Last of Us Remasters
The Last of Us, the acclaimed post-apocalyptic masterpiece, originally launched exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in 2013, relatively late in the console’s lifecycle. Consequently, Naughty Dog released a remastered edition, aptly named The Last of Us Remastered, for the PlayStation 4 in 2014.
Fast forward to 2020, and The Last of Us Part II arrived exclusively for the PS4. Just two short years later, Naughty Dog revisited the original 2013 title, embarking on a ground-up remake, christening it The Last of Us Part I. Part I saw its debut exclusively on the PS5 in 2022, with a subsequent PC release in 2023. In essence, Naughty Dog’s history of remastering titles suggests that the idea of a Part II remaster isn’t far-fetched, especially given that the PS5 is now Sony’s flagship console.
As of now, The Last of Us Part II remains available exclusively on the PS4, leaving fans eagerly awaiting any official word from Naughty Dog regarding the potential remaster for the PlayStation 5.
